Having Trouble Affording Veterinary Care?
For those that may find themselves in need of veterinary care, but not able to afford the cost, here is a good article that may be of help.
From The Humane Society of the United States:

Dog Senses Earthquake and Alerts Owner
There was a 6.5 earthquake in Eureka, CA on January 9th, 2010. A dog, Sophie, alerted her owner only seconds before the earthquake and it was caught on video. Watch the video below.
The belief that animals can predict earthquakes has been around for centuries.
One theory is that wild and domestic creatures feel the Earth vibrate before humans. Other ideas suggest they detect electrical changes in the air or gas released from the Earth. Read this great article by Maryann Mott, National Geographic:
Can Animals Sense Earthquakes?
Senior Wellness Evaluation
I found a great article on senior wellness evaluation and what steps should be considered for keeping fido as healthy as possible into the twilight years.
A senior wellness evaluation check up is something everyone should consider talking about with their veterinarian. Check out the great check list shown below.

As pets age health issues start to occur. Some of which are the following:
• Vision Loss
• Hearing Loss
• Behavioral problems
• Dental problems
• Arthritis
• Constipation
• Obesity
The nutritional needs of pets also change as they age. Other undesirable changes occur internally and may be unrecognizable to even the most observant pet owner. For example, diseases of the heart, kidney, liver, lungs and other internal organs can threaten the life of your older pet without you being aware of it.
Many of these problems are quite treatable, or at least controllable if detected early. To permit early detection of age related problems, we recommend a Senior Wellness Evaluation for your dog and/or cat 7-years-old or older. This health evaluation will be tailored to your pet’s particular needs.

Your Dog Knows More Than You Think!
There was a recent story regarding a family dog that saved a boy from a Cougar attack. This was a great heart warming story as both the dog and boy were “ok”.
There, however, was quite a bit to glean from this article that is important for people to know. The dog, Angel, was acting unusual prior to the attack as she was closely following the 11 year old boy, which was so out of the ordinary, the boy told the family how “cute” it was. The boy quipped afterwards, “She must’ve known something was up.”
It just goes to show you that dogs can sense dangers from the wild that we (humans) can’t and if you notice anything unusual in your dog’s behavior and/or body language you should take it very serious being more alert and consider seeking safety. Another important point is to not fight your dog’s better judgment. If they are acting strange on a walk you should respect this and not force walking where you want to go but rather heed the dog’s warnings as it may be for a good reason.
Just the other day on my daily walk my dog sensed trouble and immediately wanted to head home. It turned out there were Javelinas that were around the corner and they had young they were protecting. Apparently our dog knew this and sensed, with his keen sense of smell, some possible danger which I had no idea was lurking right around the corner.
The moral of the story is your dog knows more than you think!
Here is an article from Melissa Barr, from ModernDogMagazine.com regarding the attack.

Incontinence and Senior Dogs
I was doing some research on incontinence and the senior dog when I came across the Sta-On Diaper product.
I wrote to the manufacturer and asked if they had any testimonials from users and sure enough they did. Below is a testimonial regarding the product which I found more compelling than standard diapers they make for dogs that fall off and don’t look to nice. The Sta-On looks nice and most importantly stays on!
Below is the testimonial:
Taking care of a senior dog can become frustrating when it loses its continence. It really becomes a hassle cleaning up all of those messes around the house. The Sta-on pet diaper harness can solve this problem. I’ve been using it for my 14 year old Chihuahua for quite a while now. I put it on her when we go to bed, or when I leave the house for a few hours. I never have to worry about waking up in the morning and washing the sheets, or cleaning up a mess when I get home from work.
Before I discovered the Sta-on diaper harness, I would try to put just a diaper on her and it wouldn’t stay on by itself. It would fall off as soon as she started to walk. My only solution was to keep her in the cage. She would wake me up several time in the night crying to get out. Even in the cage she would potty and I’d have to wash her bed.
I just attach the Sta-on diaper harness to disposable baby diapers and cut a hole out for the tail. It is easy to use and it will save your carpet from being replaced. There are a lot of people that consider putting their older dogs down because of this problem. This simple harness is amazing and a life saver. It will make the last years more enjoyable for you and your dog.
“Many thanks for developing a product for all the precious senior pets who need a little extra help.”

In 2010 it launches the K9 Storm Intruder, a bulletproof dog vest with a wireless camera, speakers and a microphone built in. The handler can see what the dog sees and issue commands through the audio system.
