Living With Three Legs
We received the following post on our message board which was addressed by myself and another member.
User Post:
I have a 10 year old German shepherd and I don’t know much about dogs in general. I consider him old because of how long i have had him. He was attacked by a neighbors dog and had a serious injury to his left leg. The leg may need amputation. He is a very active dog, vigilant and watchful. I’m concerned about his options for a quality life after that.
Response:
Believe it or not, but dogs actually do very well with three legs. Unlike humans, dogs adapt much easier than we do. Here is a link to a site that offers some very helpful tips:

I watched a tv segment last night about a dog that received a new prosthetic leg which was very cool. It’s not cheap but it is available for around $7,500. Here is the story and associated photos you may find interesting to read.

A friend of mine had a Leonberger (large breed) who was diagnosed with cancer. They did remove her leg and she recovered very nicely, had no problem playing and enjoyed everything she did before surgery.
